Cover story: If the camo fits ...

By Wayne Potoroka

Yukon trailblazer, Martha Black, was an avid hunter and this distinguished her from her peers. These days, more and more Yukon women are taking to the hunt. From learning through government courses and picking up the sport with friends and partners, Yukon women are keen to pack up and trek into the woods.

There is a well-known picture of Martha Black, the Yukon's
first lady from 1912 to 1915 when her husband was the commissioner of the territory, and the second-ever woman elected to the House of Commons, in 1935. She's standing outdoors amidst furry foxtail grass, dressed in bulging jodhpurs, a slim-fitting Norfolk jacket and what looks to be a paisley-print silk ascot. In the gloved left hand of this Yukon socialite bred
of Chicago high society is a very unladylike double-barrelled shotgun; in her right, a stringer of limp birds, mostly ptarmigan and wildfowl, a decent take for anyone after a day's worth of hunting. READ MORE IN THE FALL 2008 ISSUE OF YUKON, NORTH OF ORDINARY.

Tongues untied

By Patricia Robertson

Native language teachers are a dedicated group. Patricia Robertson steps into the classroom with two teachers who are using the teaching-and-learning practice taught by the Yukon Native Language Centre to help ensure the survival of their traditional languages, photography by Cathie Archbould

Mary Jane Allison's classroom, in a secondary school in the Whitehorse suburb of Porter Creek, looks like any other until
you gaze around. The story of "The Girl Who Married a Bear" adorns one wall, and a pictorial Southern Tutchone alphabet
is arranged on another. On the whiteboard there's a list of Southern Tutchone words for household objects and their English meanings. We're simultaneously in two worlds—that
of an ancient oral language and its new life in the mouths of a younger generation—thanks to the dedication and commitment of a new crop of young teachers who are learners themselves. READ MORE IN THE FALL 2008 ISSUE OF YUKON, NORTH OF ORDINARY.

The way it was: Remembering Stanley Bridcut

By Claire Festel

Stanley Bridcut was a central figure in the aviation boom
of Watson Lake in southeast Yukon. Claire Festel inter-
viewed Bridcut about his flying life before he passed away in February 2008 At 3:45 p.m. on May 24, 2008, a de Ha-
villand Beaver, the North's signature bush plane, tilted from side to side in the bush-pilot's salute as it was flown over the Watson Lake Airport. A few minutes later, Frank Close addressed the 200-plus people gathered to celebrate the life of Stanley Bridcut, a Yukon aviation pioneer and legendary bush pilot
