    This snow sculpting challenge, sponsored by Air Canada, will transform Shipyards Park in Whitehorse into a winter wonderland during the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous.  International teams will carve during the day and night to create the most incredible snow art they can imagine.  Judging will occur on Saturday morning and the awards will be given on Sunday afternoon.

    This winter the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Alaska Highway. In honor of this event, the Yukon Rendezvous will present its traditional competitions (the Chainsaw Chuck or the search for Sourdough Sam) along with a few special events.

    This sledding race from February 25th to 26th contains three race categories: 130 mile sled, 130 mile skijor, and 65 mile skijor.  The race begins in Shipyard Park in Whitehorse and ends in Mendenhall.  There is a $1,000 prize for both of the 130 mile races, so the competition should be fierce in this race along the river edge.  Since the race begins in the park, there are plenty of chances to see the race start off as well as finish, so everyone is welcome to come out.  

    Entry fees are $125 for both 130 mile races and $75 for the 65 mile race.

    All entires must be submitted by February 18th.

    Fairbanks hosts the BP World Ice Art Championships from February 28th to March 25th.  Over 70 teams from across the globe will carve ice sculptures for over 45,000 visitors.  The New George Horner Ice Park and O'Grady Pond Too will provide the ice and the area for single and multi-block structures.  

    Kids are invited to play in the Flint Hills Resources Kids Park which is a playground made entirely of ice!  Life-zise animals, challenging mazes, and toys to touch and climb on will be a once in a lifetime chance to clamber all over ice with permission from parents.

    The Old Firehall hosts a Mi Casa Theatre production called Countries Shaped Like Stars. The show will feature water glasses, a mandolin, spoons and whirly-winds.
    The Ottawa Citizen calls it "Part fairy tale, part vaudeville routine, part old-fashioned love story, this piece adds up to one outstanding hour."

    Self styled outlaw hip-hop harmonica player, beatbox poet, and punk piano player, C.R. Avery has played at many renowned venues, including the Royal Albert Hall. He tours throughout Canada, the U.S., and Europe. Opening for Avery will be Vancouver Spoken Word scene notable Zaccheus Jackson.

    This piano duo of Alessio Bax and Lucille Chung creates waves wherever they perform. According to the American Record Guide for the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, Bax and Chung are “…perhaps the purely musical highlight of the evening: a huge dynamic range, unity of concentration, a carefully paced climb to the climax of the Romance and powerful swirls of sound in the Tarantella united in a lucid and deeply moving musical experience.”

    The Yukon Arts Centre hosts this HD version of the opera about the lovers from Shakespeare's A Midsummer's Night Dream are shipwrecked on the bizarre island The Tempest.  The show contains heavy Baroque influences and musical arias and ensemble influenced by Handel, Vivaldi, Rameau, and others.

    The Haines Art Council brings the incredibly harmonious VOCO, the #1 a cappella group in the US in 2007, to the stage with Moria Smith leading the four part vocal performance.  Instruments include the banjo, cello, accordion, body percussion, and a string quartet.  The street style singing is complimented by the music to create a beautiful harmony.

    The Dancers of Damelahamid, a professional dance company, will join with the UBC Museum of Anthropology to bring the Coastal First Nations Dance Festival.  This weeklong festival celebrates the diversity and spirit of the First Nations dance and culture.  Groups from all over Canada and Alaska will be presenting traditional dances, including tribes from British Columbia and the Yukon.  Aside from the tribal performances, Special Guest Artists include a hoop dancer from Winnipeg and an Aboriginal dancer from Melbourne, Australia. 

    tTickets range from $25 for adults and $20 dollars for students, seniors, and MOA members.

    The events will take place in the Museum of Anthropology.

    The Southeast Alaska Building Industry Association provides this opportunity to see building and home product vendors, attend educational seminars to do home repairs, and enjoy a catered wine tasting.  

    Tickets are $20 if booked in advance and $25 at the door.  However, it is only $5 to attend the home show.  
    The wine tasting is on Friday from 17:00-21:00, and the home show is open from 10:00-17:00 on Saturday and from 11:00-16:00 on Sunday.

    A musical comedy troupe formed in 1991, The Arrogant Worms will perform this March at the Yukon Arts Centre. The All Music Guide calls them "perfect showmen" and the Toronto Star says that the Arrogant Worms are "certifiably demented."

    Percy DeWolfe delivered the mail between Dawson City and Fortymile, and Eagle, Alaska from 1910 to 1949. For his services he was awarded a medal from King George. The Memorial Mail Race celebrates Percy's achievement through  210- and a 100-mile events.

    There is a $300 entry fee before March 1st and a $350 entry after March 1st. All Mushers must register by March 14th.

    Outdoor enthusiasts gather for three days worth of exhibits, product demonstrations and sales, and workshops all geared toward a nature enthusiast. 
    A wide variety of items will be for sale, including gear for hunting, camping, fishing, paragliding; model planes, kayaks, canoes, ATVs, motorbikes; and nature books, binoculars, and outdoor apparel.
    Workshop topics include fishing, bicycling, gold panning, outdoor skills, boating basics, reading the weather, family hiking, diving, and many more.

    The 44th Annual Rotary Music Festival will light up Whitehorse's music scene from April 11th to April 21st. In addition to the numerous performances, there will also be 7 adjudicators from different areas of Canada who will give their opinions on a performer's ability, technique, style, and progress.  

    All entries must be made by February 1st to avoid a doubling of the registration fee.  All late entires must be completed by February 8th.

    The Calgary Underground Film Festival brings together film lovers for a festival centred around the films that defy convention.  The event includes a slew of international films not normally seen in North America, including every genre from horror to comedy.  

    There is also the 48 Hour Challenge to consider competing in.  the competition is open to anyone who wants to take the challenge of writing, composing, and finishing a short film with a challenge given genre in a 48 hour window.

    The Globe Cinema will host the event.

    The non-auditioned choir of Whitehorse hosts it's annual spring concert in late April at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Whitehorse.  The choir of over 100 singers has previously performed during the Olympic Torch Relay in Whitehorse and at the Yukon Day in the Olympics.  The music promises to be awe-inspiring as local voices blend together to create one harmonious tone.

    The 20th Annual Great Alaska Craftbrew and Homebrew Festival runs from May 25th to May 26th in Haines.  The festival will include a variety of regional microbrews.  Aside from wine tastings, there will also be awards.  

    On Friday the 25th, there will be a delicious Gourmet Brewers' Diner at 18:00 in Harriet Hall.  This 5 course meal cost $75 with each course specially matched with a brew to bring out the flavour of the food.

    On Saturday the 26th, there will be a tasting from 13:00 to 17:00 in Dalton City.  Admission is $35, although tickets bought in February will cost only $30.  There is also the Slammin' Salmon 5k walk and run, plus a 10k run, on Saturday at 9:00.  it is only $10 to get a bit of exercise pre-tasting, and the price includes a t-shirt.

    To enter a brew into the festival, you must have 2 bottles ready as well as a $5 entry fee, although additional entries cost only $3.  All entires must be made by Wednesday, May 23rd.

    Haines invites all fishers to this two weekend long fishing competition on May 26th-28th and again on June 2nd-3rd.  Aside from catching some great food, there are also some fantastic prizes available.

    This year's Northern Alberta Children's Festival, sponsored by Tim Horton, is an adventure for the whole family.  With numerous activities for all ages, including the Telus Toddle Town for young ones, the interactive site activities for all ages, and the evening show performances which will keep even the adults mesmerized by the good music.

Each year Yukon's bluegrass community and bluegrass lovers converge to create and listen to great music.  This year's festival will include performers from Canada and neighbouring Alaska who will liven up the stage at the Yukon Arts Centre over the 2nd weekend in June.

    The Municipality of Skagway Convention and Visitors Bureau hosts the Second Annual Skagway Marathon, 26 miles, which runs from Skagway up to Dyea Road, to West Creek, and back down to finish in Skagway.  
    There is also a half marathon, 13 miles, which goes from Skagway to Dyea Road and back.

    This combination of all things Scottish is the most northern highland games in all of North America.  Heavy events involved include the hammer throw and the caber toss which involves throwing a 175 pound log.  These two events will join the typical competitiveness of bagpiping, drumming, and highland dancing.  There are cash prizes available for winning each category in all the competition, and watching the events is surely a throwback to the olden days in Scotland.  

    There is also a Banquet and Tartan Ball from 18:00 to 1:00.  Tickets for the meal and the ball are $50 for adults, while children 6-10 eating a steak dinner are $30, and children 4-10 eating a hot dog dinner are $15.  
    If your not feeling hungry but want to enjoy the ball from 21:00 to 1:00, then separate tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for youths age 11-18, and free for children 4-10.  
    All minors must be accompanied by adults during this ball.

    Tickets for the weekend are $25 for adults, $10 for children 6-12, and free for children 5 and under.  Early bird passes available before May 20th that save adults $5.

    This bike ride doesn't allow any lights, but don't worry about the lack of artificial light because mother nature provides more than enough light to bike.  The race is geared to be fun for advanced riders as well as novices.  The trail, which runs from 12-15 km, includes steep climbs and wide ski trail sections that allow for easy passing. 

    Entry for a single rider is $65, $130 for a two person team, and prices continue upward for larger teams.

    The longest canoe and kayak race in the world runs from Whitehorse to the Alaska Pipeline Bridge on the Dalton Highway.  The race, best described as an expedition race, takes 7 to 12 days with 18 hours of solid paddling.  The race calls all mentally and physically tough paddlers who don't mind getting everything from clothes, tents, and sleeping bags drench in the wild river.

    This 4 day fair has the theme "Fair Like There's No Tomorrow!"  The fair will include numerous attractions, delicious food, activities geared toward all ages, musical entertainment, various contests, and plenty of things to see and buy.  

    Prices range, but there is a $40 four-day pass and a $32 early bird discount if tickets are bought before June 15th.  Tickets are also available at the gate for $10 on Thursday and Sunday, and $15 on Friday and Saturday.  Kids 6 to 12 are only $6 a day and children 5 and under are free.

    This shorter version of the gruelling Yukon 1000 is still long, but it is more bearable.  Paddlers will to down the Nusutlin River and end on Teslin Lake.  The race takes two days filled with whitewater fun and an overnight stop.  No one has ever done both races in the same year, but will this year be the first?

    Terry Fox endured 16 months of chemotherapy when he decided to do the Marathon of Hope in 1980.  He inspired people to keep achieving their dreams no matter what circumstances had been dealt to them.  This run, in honour of Terry Fox, is completed every year  by thousands of Canadians in many different locations to raise money for cancer research.  All it takes it some running with family or friends on a special day to participate in this international event.  Running sites in the Yukon are located in Carmacks, Dawson City, Watson Lake, and Whitehorse.
