Perseverance Theatre's "Bigfoot and Other Lost Souls" (04 May 2012)

McIntyre Marsh Bird Banding Demonstration (05 May 2012)

This is a great opportunity to see biologists capture, band, and free birds flocking through the marshlands. The process is painless for the birds and intriguing for visitors as the biologists explain the process of tracking bracelets and the different spec ices of birds. The station is located at kilometre 4 on Fish Lake Road with parking available in the large parking lot at Fish Lake Road and Copper Haul Road. The station is just a brisk 100 meter walk away from the parking lot.

The station will be open for visitors throughout the rest of the month of May from 7 am to noon on weekends and holidays.

Belinda Harrow and D'Arcy Wilson will have their works in the ODD Gallery from May 17th to June 16th. Aside from their artwork being on display, they will both host numerous artist talks throughout the month. Both Harrow and Wilson try and convey the stereotypes humans have when interacting with wild animals, and both explore how those stereotypes affect relations between not only people and animals but also between people and other people.

Local artist Lee Mennell leads a guided walk along Rat Lake to take in the early signs of spring including frog croaks and birds adventuring in the wetlands. Make sure to bring rubber boots, an extra layer of clothes, binoculars, and a camera!

Admission is free.

Rat Lake is located along Carcross Road.

Meet at Carcross Cutoff at 9 pm to follow the group to Rat Lake.

Calgary International Children's Festival (22 May 2012)

This is any child's dream as it brings professional dance, live theatre, music, and activities to children of all ages. There will be recreations of classic tales such as The Ugly Duckling and workshops on things like how to create and use puppets.

The Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts will provide something for everyone to enjoy, aiming to entertain children as young as two and adults as old as 102. Performers will come from all over the world including Brazil, West Africa, Scotland, Belgium, USA, and different places in Canada.

Tickets go on sale for the public on April 2nd, and all children 2 and under are free to enter.

Great Alaska Craftbrew and Homebrew Festival (25 May 2012)

The 20th Annual Great Alaska Craftbrew and Homebrew Festival runs from May 25th to May 26th in Haines. The festival will include a variety of regional microbrews. Aside from wine tastings, there will also be awards.

On Friday the 25th, there will be a delicious Gourmet Brewers' Diner at 18:00 in Harriet Hall. This 5 course meal cost $75 with each course specially matched with a brew to bring out the flavour of the food.

On Saturday the 26th, there will be a tasting from 13:00 to 17:00 in Dalton City. Admission is $35, although tickets bought in February will cost only $30. There is also the Slammin' Salmon 5k walk and run, plus a 10k run, on Saturday at 9:00. it is only $10 to get a bit of exercise pre-tasting, and the price includes a t-shirt.

To enter a brew into the festival, you must have 2 bottles ready as well as a $5 entry fee, although additional entries cost only $3. All entires must be made by Wednesday, May 23rd.

Effy Croft Memorial Slow Pitch Ball Tournament (25 May 2012)

This annual, co-ed tournament takes over the Faro Ball Diamonds on May 25th, 26th, and 27th as team compete in friendly games of slow pitch.

The entry fee is $250 per team, but if the team is signed up before May 5th the entry fee is only $200 per team. Teams must have a minimum of four males and four females to compete.

This year's Northern Alberta Children's Festival, sponsored by Tim Horton, is an adventure for the whole family. With numerous activities for all ages, including the Telus Toddle Town for young ones, the interactive site activities for all ages, and the evening show performances which will keep even the adults mesmerized by the good music.

Parking is free and tickets are $10.50 an adult, $9 a child, with a $3 charge for all site activities, but there are early bird discounts, special wristbands, and opening day grandparents and senior citizens are admitted 2 for 1.

This symposium is a collection of Alaskan writers whose works embody the theme of Frontiers of Language. All of the writers illustrate the ideal Northern life through open space, wild things, determination, and living on the edge. Topics to be addressed include "Bear with Me: Managing Wild ANimals Penned by Perspective," "The Secrets of Writing Manuscripts that Sell," and "The Fine Line between Obsession and Discipline."

The keynote speaker is Scott Silver who is an Oscar-nomicanted screenwriter. Other presenters include Seth Kantner, Jim Heacox, Lynn Schooler, Nick Jans, Dan Henry, Heather Lende, Jeff Brady, Deb Vanasse, and John Straley.

Air North, Yukon's Airline presents it's 3rd Annual Runway Family Fun Run and Pancake Breakfast! The race takes a 8.75 km route around the Erik Nielson Whitehorse International Airport starting and ending at Air North. After the race, participants are welcome to enjoy a delicious pancake breakfast during which plenty of prizes will be awarded.

Registration starts at 8:30 am in front of the Air North Administration Building at 150 Condor Road. The race begins at 9:00 am for walkers and 9:30 for runners.

This fundraiser for the Humane Society Yukon is designed for every dog lover! For two days the Takhini Arena will be livened up by plenty of pups and owners running around participating in for training sessions and seminars with Brad Pattison, host of the TV show "At the End of my Leash." Additionally, different vendors, businesses, and organizations will man over 50 indoor booths aimed to provide entertainment and aide for those with loveable furry friends. A silent auctions will benefit the humane society, and delicious barbecue will keep everyone well fed and ready to tackle the next event.

Both seminars will be followed by an autograph and photo session with Brad Pattison. All three sessions have a limit of 40 dogs maximum.

Saturday, June 2nd:

1st seminar from 9am - noon at $50 per person

2nd seminar from 2pm - 5pm at $50 per person

Sunday, June 3rd:

This third International Glacial Archaeology Symposium brings together archaeologists who study the growing field of Glacial Archeology which include the study of prehistoric and historic materials unearthed from melting ice. Previous meetings were held in Bern, Switzerland and Trondhiem, Norway, and this symposium will feature an opening night reception at the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre and three days of glacial research presentations from various places around the world including Scandinavia, the Andes, Europe, and North America.

There will also be two excursions participants can sign up for. The first is a trip a sub-alpine archeological site and a helicopter trip to an alpine ice patch. The second is a trip to the edge of the St. Elias Mountains where the new Champagne and Aishihik Cultural Centre has opened in Haines Junction.

The event is hosted by the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre.

Weekend on the Wing: Northern Birding Festival (08 Jun 2012)

This weekend long festival has different workshops, walks in the park, and talks with different Dempster bird specialists. The event is hosted by Friends of Dempster Country Society and Yukon Parks. The Yukon Bird Club will help people spot birds, mimic their calls, and answer questions. Hikes into the park will identify different bird habitats and a road caravan will stop at different points along the highway to who nesting spots.

Tombstone Mountain Campground is located at kilometre 72 on the Dempster Highway.

The Municipality of Skagway Convention and Visitors Bureau hosts the Second Annual Skagway Marathon, 26 miles, which runs from Skagway up to Dyea Road, to West Creek, and back down to finish in Skagway.

There is also a half marathon, 13 miles, which goes from Skagway to Dyea Road and back.

The cost for the full marathon is $25, the half marathon is $15, and a t-shirt is $15. Registration runs until May 26th, although same day registration is available for an increased cost of $35 for the full marathon and $25 for the half marathon.
